Keeping the balance of the body on top of a surfboard, while it slides on a wave, is one of the biggest challenges of the sport when you’re a begginer.
Only about 5% of the time of a surf session is spent sliding standing on the surfboard. And in that short space of time, we want to do everything but fall!
What factors can influence our balance?
→ Spatio-Temporal Orientation – Awareness of body positioning in space and time;
→ Motor Conditionants – Strength, Speed, Endurance and Flexibility;
→ Coordinative Capabilities – Interaction between the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system.
So what do we need to get a good balance?
→ Have a good technique to perform movements more efficiently with a better positioning of the mass center;
→ Good functional development of core muscles, ensuring good stabilization and fixation of body segments in specific movements;
→ Good coordination for muscles to work in synergy.
Are there more waves that you fall on than the ones you can finish?
Persistence and practice will bring progress, however our job is to boost your evolution.
Through complementary out-of-water workouts, we can improve your performance riding the surfboard, increasing your balance and reducing your falls. Out of water, we are able to significantly reduce the constraints and fill out the shortcomings that are hampering your progression.
Below we leave a video with moments of complementary surf training in the gym:
